Explore the photographic potential of Singapore with our Guided Photo Shootout. Shootouts may sound a little scary but in fact they're an excellent and fun way to hone your photography skills with a group of like-minded enthusiasts. These guided sessions focus on different areas of Singapore, and particular festivals or events. We'll leave it to you to pick the occasion that interests you the most!
During these two-and-a-half-hour group sessions, you'll get to channel your creativity as you focus your lens on particular subjects, themes and/or scenes, with our instructor on hand to give pointers on light, composition and technical camera settings.
Participants will learn how to assess light and shadow, photograph the subject from different perspectives, alter the feel of the image by changing backgrounds, and adjust their camera settings for different creative effects. Groups are kept small to allow for personalised attention. A DSLR camera or similar is required.
These are themed photography classes held monthly - students can choose from Night Photography, Cultural Festivities Photography Class, Still Life Photography, Macro Photography and Lens Technique Masterclasses. Some examples of shoot out locations include:
Get hands-on tutoring as you capture the city’s Colonial-era iconic buildings located in the Raffles Hotel area. Learn when to use the wide angle and when to use the telephoto lens, how to incorporate people and movement in the shots, and how to shoot in the changing lighting conditions as day turns to night. Your instructor will guide you through controlling aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
Colonial District: Get hands-on tutoring as you capture the city’s Colonial-era iconic buildings located in the Raffles Hotel area. Lantern Festival, Chinese Gardens (Night Photography Masterclass): Learn how to capture the Chinese Gardens at sunset and into the night during this colourful Chinese festival when the park is decorated by hundreds of colourful lanterns and displays. You’ll learn how to work at night with and without a tripod to capture the scenery as well as the action of visitors as they enjoy lantern walks, train rides and games. Learn how and when to use flash and how best to capture the fireworks at 9pm.
Deepavali: Join us in Little India for this vibrant Hindu festival and learn how to capture the lights, the people, the markets and the action at sunset and into the night. We will be shooting in the street, in a temporary market and in a Hindu temple. You’ll be learning how to compose beautiful photos in these different locations and how to use the appropriate camera settings to work in low light and at night and to create different effects with the colourful Deepavali decorations and lights.
Orchard Rd Christmas Lights: Get hands-on tutoring as you capture Orchard Road at its most beautiful… lit up in technicolour glory by Christmas Lights. You’ve learned the theory about how to use your DSLR camera; now come and get some practical hands-on guidance as you pick up framing and composition tips from portrait and editorial photographer, Karen Lucas. You’ll be guided from sunset into the night as you use Aperture Priority (Av/A) to capture stunning close-up details of Christmas lights and decorations, and use Shutter Speed Priority (Tv/S) to get creative with Zoom Burst effects, painting with light and movement blur. You’ll also learn how to photograph a street scene at night and how to take great portraits with the Christmas lights in the background.
Suitability: This experience is for anyone who enjoys photography or wants to give photography a try.
Venue: A shophouse in Singapore and locations around Singapore as appropriate.
Session Length: The session takes approximately 2 hours and 30 mins.
Booking: Please allow four weeks for booking. Courses run regularly throughout the year.
